POETRY IN MOTION - A SMILE TO REMEMBER

poetry in motion

Fun Fact: We used real glass in the scenes but didn’t intend on picking it up, the moment where Hannah picks it up was shot to appear to be faster then she really picks it up. However her dropping it was not planned, just off camera Me, Tristian , And Liana were definitely looking at one another in surprise. It made for one of my favorite shots in the short and a reminder to let your actors do their job. (No one was injured in the making of this film)

Fun Fact: I purchased real goldfish for the scenes as i wasn’t sure how to VFX them in. They all were named, the goldfish after filming were given to my friends sister.

Fun Fact: On second day of shooting Hannah lost her voice before hand. We were initially worried but it made for such a strong delivery as it felt like her character was breaking from the news that her fish were gone.

“We had the goldfish. They went around and around in the bowl.

This was made right before I would find out I made it to the Jimmy Awards. This film was shot over 32 weeks ago at the time of this being posted.

It took longer then it should've because i was scarred taking on a project of this size. Poems made into films are difficult especially with little budget to spend on them.

Despite this my love for poems and film made this something i just had to do. “A Smile To Remember” was one of the first poems I read when getting into Bukowski. It holds a special place in my heart and seemed like a great way to start off this series.

We made some changes to the orignal story to provide a expericne you woudln’t get from just reading or listening to it. We also didn;t use a real cat and instead used my dog Zeus since I don’t own a cat.

The color grading was completely scrapped originally and changed as i learned how to grade better and thus didn’t like the grade I had started with. The date of completion for the short was 1/10/2024.

Fun Fact: In this shot we are sitting on the table and the boom in bloopers hits her head on purpose for the funs. I think my direction was something like smile and talk to the fish.

Fun Fact: I still own the fish bowl it’s in the spare room.
